Scanner Settings

New scanners today are reasonably priced and even easier to use than ones of 5 years ago. The results however, are not as easy as simply scanning the documents and you're done. Some minor adjustments are necessary for an optimal scan.  Take some time, read through the manual and be the expert!

The most efficient and smallest electronic documents (.PDF) are those that have never been scanned in the first place.

Suggestions:

  • Create your documents in Word, WordPerfect or other application and save/print directly to .PDF when possible.

  • Scan your documents in black and white only.

  • Scan to .PDF, it will optimize and compress the image on its own.

  • Scan at 300 dpi (Dots per Inch) or less.

  • The smaller the file the better for storage, faster uploads and less internet traffic .

What not to do:

  • Don't print the entire document, sign and rescan everything.

  • Don't scan documents for CM/ECF in color, ever!

  • Don't scan documents in Grey scale, it’s the same as color.

  • Don't use high resolution, it makes the files larger, for text minimal is best.

    • To determine the file size of the PDF, open it in Adobe
