Motion to Redact, Restrict and Replace

This motion may be filed in a closed case. A Motion to Redact, Restrict and Replace is used to restrict and replace a previously filed document with a redacted version of the identical document in the same docket entry.  

Filing Requirements:

  • Motion to Redact, Restrict and Replace:

    • The bankruptcy case does not need to be reopened.

    • The motion should include language to "redact", "restrict access to document #__" and "replace document #__".

    • No notice required.  

    • The redacted document does not need to be attached to your motion.

    • If there is more than one document in the same bankruptcy case to be redacted, restricted and replaced, each document number can be included in one motion.

    • If the Motion to Redact, Restrict and Replace is for a Proof of Claim, add additional docket text when filing the motion to include the Claim Number(s); OR Refer the Motion to the docket number to be redacted.

  • Filing Fee.  (Redaction Fee charged per affected case.)

  • Proof of Service, if applicable.

  • Proposed order (example order in Word format)  

    • Submit a proposed order (for each case) in Word format to proposed_orders@ndb.uscourts.gov.  Please include the case number in the subject line of the email and include the name and telephone number of a contact person.  

    • After entry of the order, attach the identical (redacted) document (for each case) to an email and send to clerks_office@ndb.uscourts.gov. Please include the case number in the subject line of the email and include the name and telephone number of a contact person.


To File Electronically:

  1. Log into CM/ECF.

  2. Select [Bankruptcy> Motions/Applications]

  3. Enter the case number (e.g, xx-xxxxx).

  4. Select [Redact (Fee Per Case)] from the event list.

  5. Select the party filer. If the party is not listed, click on Add/Create New Party.

    Note:  The Attorney/Party Association screen may appear. If your party selection was correct, check the box to create an association.

  6. Enter a "y or n" if proof of service is included with the motion.

    Note:  The Motion and Proof of Service may be a single PDF.  The Motion must be the first document in your PDF.

  7. Browse to select the Motion (.pdf file).

  8. Select the document this Motion this relates to, or type in Proof of Claim No. to docket text.

  9. Leave Receipt field blank and click [Next] to pay by internet or ACH.

  10. Verify the final docket text; if correct, click [Next] to submit your document(s).

    Note: The Notice of Electronic Filing displays giving you the document number. Copies of this notice are immediately e-mailed to all participants who receive electronic notification in the case.
